Metallography
Metallography (ASTM E3) is the study of the structure of metals, typically using the microscope to view objects. A small sample is selected carefully considering location and orientation, mounted and polished. Depending upon the material it is left unetched or etched with a variety of different etchants that bring out the structure which is viewed from 10X to 1000X. Photomicrographs (ASTM E883) are available upon request.
Some of the structures examined are:
- Banding
- Decarb
- Grain Boundaries
- IGO/IGA
- Nodularity
- Phases- including ferrite, pearlite, martensite, austenite, etc.
- Case Depth
- Ferrite Rating
- Graphite in Castings
- Microcleanliness
- Plating
Some of the measurements made are:
- Alpha Case
- Carburization, including white layer thickness
- Decarb (Complete & Partial)
- Grain Size
- Oxidation/Corrosion
- Plating Thickness
- Total or Visual Case Depth
